Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). The optic nerve plays a vital role in transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain, and damage to it can result in progressive vision loss. Without timely treatment, glaucoma can lead to permanent blindness.
Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG): The most common type, caused by inefficient drainage of fluid (aqueous humor) from the eye, leading to gradual IOP buildup. Angle-Closure Glaucoma: Occurs when the drainage angle in the eye becomes blocked, leading to a sudden rise in IOP. This is a medical emergency. Normal-Tension Glaucoma: Optic nerve damage occurs despite normal eye pressure, often associated with poor blood flow to the optic nerve. Congenital Glaucoma: A rare form present at birth, caused by improper development of the eye’s drainage system. Secondary Glaucoma: Results from another condition, such as trauma, inflammation, or the use of certain medications like steroids. Exfoliation Glaucoma: A type of secondary glaucoma caused by the buildup of exfoliative material on the lens and drainage tissues.
